This is a site encouraging all kinds of people and organisations to set up their own online services such as websites, online clouds, social networks, messaging etc. It’s much easier and cheaper than you think, and lets you truly escape the clutches of giant tech corporations.

There are three different ways to set up your own online services, depending on how technically skilled you are:

The Easy Way

“Managed Hosting” is the really easy option!

Managed hosting means a hosting company does all the techy stuff for you behind the scenes, while you own and manage your services through easy-to-use graphical interfaces. It makes running your own online service as easy to use as logging into an email account or website.

The Moderate Way

Server OSes are the moderately techy option.

This involves manually installing a specially designed operating system on a PC or VPS. Once the OS itself is installed, it then lets you set up and maintain your own online services on that machine entirely through a graphical interface.

The Nerdy Way

Creating online services entirely manually is the most technically demanding option.

Manual operation means installing, maintaining and updating online services using the instructions and technical documentation provided by the software developers. This may involve things like command lines, FTP, text editors etc and may assume a lot of prior technical knowledge.
